BREAKING NEWS: Mass Shooting in Tumbler Ridge Claims 9 Lives

TUMBLER RIDGE, B.C. — On Tuesday, February 10, 2026, a terrible mass shooting rocked the tiny community of Tumbler Ridge in northeast British Columbia.

Shortly after 1:20 p.m., RCMP officers were dispatched to Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in response to reports of an active shooter. Residents received a Police Initiated Public Alert, advising them to remain indoors and seek shelter while police and emergency services responded. 

Nine people, including the alleged shooter, have died, according to EnergeticCity.ca. During the response, more police officers, emergency medical personnel, and air ambulances were sent to the scene.

Later that evening, the RCMP cancelled the emergency alert, stating that they don't think there are any unaccounted-for suspects or continuing threats to the public.

Saulteau First Nation Celebrates Ribbon Skirts and Indigenous Culture

Saulteau First Nation recently organized a Ribbon Skirt and Indigenous Culture Celebration on January 31, 2026 at the SFN Cultural Centre, bringing together community members, artists, and visitors for a meaningful day of culture, fashion, and connection. 

The event included an Indigenous fashion show that presented both ribbon skirts and traditional and modern fashion designs. The collection displayed through all the pieces showed personal experiences and personal identity and the important cultural value of ribbon skirts in Indigenous communities. The designers and models demonstrated their works through a runway presentation which showed their traditions of resilience and artistic expression.

Alongside the fashion show, a market showcased Indigenous-made items, including accessories, materials, and handmade goods, providing local artists and makers an opportunity to share and sell their work.

Event organizer Kirsta Lindstrom shared that the goal is to grow this celebration and make it an annual event, creating ongoing opportunities to honour Indigenous culture, support artists, and bring the community together.

The celebration demonstrated how essential Indigenous traditions need both protection and transmission to create educational environments which foster community development through knowledge and pride and social bonds. Chetwynd Curling Club Brings Community Together for Friday Funspiel 

The Chetwynd Curling Club celebrated Curling Day in Canada with a lively and well-attended Friday Funspiel, turning the curling rink into a hub of excitement, friendly competition, and community spirit last January 30, 2026.

The rink became filled with players who generated sounds of laughter and cheering while they executed their shots. The event succeeded because its purpose was to create enjoyment which attracted both experienced curlers and beginners who wanted to try the sport.

Chetwynd operates two separate leagues which include the Women's league and Open League that takes place between October and March. There is also league that operates from November to February which enables children who are nine years old or older to participate in the Kids League program. The organization will offer “Learn to crawl program” as a 4-8 week course next year to attract more novice participants.

Organizers shared that events like this are an important way to celebrate Canada’s curling culture while also introducing the sport to more people in the community. The strong turnout and positive energy throughout the evening highlighted curling’s role as a sport that brings people together, especially in smaller towns like Chetwynd.

District of Chetwynd Proclaims January 2026 as Crime Stoppers Month

The District of Chetwynd has officially proclaimed January 2026 as Crime Stoppers Month, acknowledging the important role Northern BC Crime Stoppers plays in supporting public safety across the region.

The proclamation was signed by Mayor Allen Courtoreille and recognises the organization’s efforts as a non-profit operating throughout Northern British Columbia. Every January, communities all over the world observe Crime Stoppers Month to raise awareness of the program's effectiveness in preventing and solving crimes.

According to the announcement, criminal activities such as drug trafficking, human trafficking, physical violence, property theft, money laundering, organized crime, and fraud continue to negatively impact the health and economic well-being of communities. Crime Stoppers provides significant tool by allowing concerned citizens to anonymously share information with law enforcement.

RCMP in Northern British Columbia received tips from citizens in 2025 that helped them prevent, solve, and lessen crime in their communities. The District of Chetwynd acknowledged these efforts and the positive involvement of Northern BC Crime Stoppers has made to community safety. The event highlighted the partnership between local government, law enforcement, and residents in keeping Chetwynd a safer place to live.

The proclamation was presented during a ceremony at the Chetwynd Municipal Hall, attended by RCMP members and community representatives.

Residents are reminded that Crime Stoppers allows individuals to report information anonymously and safely, helping law enforcement without fear of retaliation.
