CHETWYND, B.C. — September 30, 2026

Members of the Chetwynd community gathered September 30 for the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation to honour the children who never returned home from residential schools, Survivors, their families and the communities who continue to carry their stories, in a day of remembrance, reflection and solidarity.

The gathering was hosted by the Tansi Friendship Centre Society and took place from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Canadian Royal Legion. The event was a time for people to come together, remember those affected by residential schools and acknowledge the ongoing impacts on Indigenous families and communities.

Peace FM and Chet TV were part of the community to witness and capture moments from the event, documenting the gathering and the people who came together to celebrate this important day.

The afternoon highlighted the importance of remembering the past while continuing to build understanding, compassion and meaningful relationships within the community. It was a place to connect, share and support one another too.

After the remembrance walk, participants were then invited to join us for a community dinner, an opportunity to continue the conversation and build community.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is a public holiday on September 30 in Canada. It commemorates the children who did not come home, it recognizes Survivors of residential schools and their families and communities. And, it offers an important reminder and incredibly sad reminder that we need to discover the truth about Canada’s residential school system and pursue reconciliation.

At community gatherings such as this one, the opportunity is given to listen, reflect and learn but then also stand together in solidarity behind those whose lives and families have been affected.

Peace FM and Chet TV thank the Tansi Friendship Centre Society and everyone who participated in the gathering for welcoming the community and creating space for remembrance and connection.
